SEO is the only traffic source that compounds. Every product page you optimise today earns traffic for years. Yet most new Shopify stores push hard on ads and ignore the SEO checklist that would have them ranking in month 4.
Here’s the five-step checklist we run on every new store. Each step takes under 30 minutes. Run through all five in an afternoon and your store will be ahead of 90% of first-year Shopify stores on SEO.
Step 1 — The 60-second audit
Before changing anything, see where you stand:
- Google Search Console. Verify your store (free). Takes 5 minutes via Shopify’s SEO settings.
- Check your homepage title tag. In Shopify admin → Online Store → Preferences. Default titles are weak.
- Run PageSpeed Insights. Under 50 means your theme needs work. Dawn scores 85+ out of the box.
Step 2 — Product page SEO
Product pages are your biggest SEO asset. Most searchers enter Google with a specific product in mind.
Page title (≤60 chars)
Format: Product Name — Specific Benefit | Store Name. Primary keyword first, brand last.
Meta description (≤155 chars)
First sentence answers “what is it?”. Second sentence signals benefit or social proof. Don’t stuff keywords — write for a human scrolling Google results.
Alt text on every image
Describe what’s in the image, not the keyword you want to rank for. “Grey padded dog harness worn by golden retriever” beats “dog harness buy online”.
Step 3 — Collection pages: hub-and-spoke
Each collection should target one category keyword, have 200+ words of unique copy above the product grid, and link internally to your top 3 products in that collection.
Step 4 — Internal linking
Every product page should link out to at least two related products and one collection. Every blog post should link to at least one product or collection. Use descriptive anchor text.
Step 5 — First three backlinks
- Your own social profiles. IG bio, TikTok bio, Pinterest profile.
- Industry directories. Shopify Partner Directory, Google Business Profile.
- One guest post. Find a small niche blog, pitch a genuinely useful article.
What to expect
- Month 1: Google indexes your site.
- Month 2–3: Long-tail keywords rank page 2–3.
- Month 4–6: Best content ranks page 1 for lower-competition keywords.
