Every new Shopify owner makes the same mistake: installing 20 apps in the first week, each with its own monthly fee, each slowing down the store. Within a month they’re paying $150/mo before making a single sale.
Here’s the rule we follow: no paid apps until you have consistent traffic and at least 10 sales. Until then, every function you need is available free. Here are the ten we install on every store’s first day.
Reviews
1. Judge.me — unlimited reviews, free plan
Judge.me’s free plan includes unlimited review requests, photo reviews, and the ability to import reviews from AliExpress, Amazon, or a CSV. Photo reviews convert about 2× better than text-only, and social proof is the single biggest factor in first-time buyer decisions.
2. Shopify Email — built-in, free up to 10,000 emails/mo
Before reaching for Klaviyo, use what’s already in your admin. Shopify Email is free for your first 10,000 emails per month — plenty for a launch-stage store. Set up a welcome flow and an abandoned-cart email and you’ll recover 10–15% of otherwise lost sales.
SEO
3. Smart SEO — free tier for schema, sitemap, alt tags
Shopify handles basic SEO reasonably well, but Smart SEO’s free tier adds JSON-LD schema for products, auto-generates meta descriptions, and sweeps alt tags across your image library. Takes 10 minutes to configure, improves search appearance immediately.
Conversion
4. Privy — free popup + email capture
An exit-intent popup offering 10% off in exchange for an email address recovers subscribers who were about to bounce. Privy’s free plan supports up to 100 subscribers, which is enough runway to test the offer before deciding whether to pay for the $29/mo plan later.
5. Free Shipping Bar — by Hextom
A simple top-bar showing “Spend $X more for free shipping” consistently lifts average order value by 10–20%. The free Hextom app handles country targeting, currency conversion, and cart-total triggers. Zero paid features needed.
Fulfillment
6. DSers — if you’re dropshipping from AliExpress
DSers is the official AliExpress dropshipping tool, free for up to 3,000 products. Bulk order processing, auto price updates, supplier swaps. Essential once orders start coming in — doing it manually loses you hours per week.
7. Printify — if you’re doing print-on-demand
Free plan, no monthly fee. Thousands of POD products from apparel to homewares with global fulfillment. Pairs cleanly with Shopify’s product creation flow.
Analytics
8. Shopify Analytics + Google Analytics 4
Both are free. Shopify’s built-in reports cover sessions, conversion rate, AOV, and top products — enough for 90% of early decisions. Add GA4 (via Shopify’s integration) for traffic source insight and funnel analysis.
Customer service
9. Shopify Inbox — free live chat
Native Shopify live chat widget, free forever. Routes to the Shopify Inbox mobile app so you can answer from your phone. Auto-responses cover out-of-hours queries.
Marketing pixels
10. Meta Pixel + TikTok Pixel
Both have official Shopify apps, both are free. Install them on day one even if you’re not running ads yet — pixels build audience data retroactively. By the time you want to run your first ad (probably month 2 or 3), you’ll have enough data to launch a lookalike audience.
