This is a breakdown of how one of our community members, James (name changed), hit $1,040 in his first month running a Shopify store. Based in Brisbane, runs it as a side hustle, had no ecommerce experience before launching.

The backstory
James is 32, works in logistics, and had been reading StoreMints for three months before launching. Tried Amazon FBA in 2024, failed, lost $600 on inventory. This time he wanted to minimise upfront risk and learn the mechanics first.
Rule: spend no more than $300 total in month one. Break even or stop.
The niche + why
Adventure pet gear — harnesses and leashes for hiking dogs. Three reasons:
- His sister runs a dog walking business in Brisbane — built-in first customer network
- TikTok search for “adventure dog” trending 40% YoY in AU
- AliExpress had a proven supplier with 12K+ orders
First 30 days — what got built
Weekend 1: Shopify on Dawn theme, 6 products from DSers, simple About/Contact, free apps (Judge.me, Shopify Email, Smart SEO, free shipping bar), Shopify Payments activated, test order placed.
Week 2–4: content and traffic. No ads yet.
The 3 decisions that worked
1. TikTok first, ads never
14 TikTok videos in month one. Not fancy — him walking his own dog with the product, shot on his phone. Two hit 80K+ views. Those two sent 73% of first-month traffic.
2. Free shipping over $65
Average product was $45. Free shipping at $65 pushed 62% of customers to add a second item. AOV hit $71.
3. Shopify Email welcome flow
Popup offering 10% off. 4.2% conversion. By end of month 1: 340 subscribers. Welcome flow drove $180 of $1,040 total — 17% from email set up once and forgotten.
Mistakes + what he’d redo
- Popup went live day 8 — should have been day 1 (missed ~80 subscribers)
- Ran AliExpress supplier photos for 2 weeks — conversion 2× when swapped to real photos with his dog
- AU-only shipping initially — 14 failed US checkouts. Now ships globally.
Revenue breakdown
- Gross: $1,040 (22 orders, AOV $47)
- COGS: $384
- Shopify fees: $36
- Shipping: $180
- Apps: $0 · Ads: $0
- Net profit: ~$440
Not life-changing. But 100% from content + email, not ads. That’s the model that scales without burning cash on Meta.
